The best gender reveal activity for a small celebration is usually the simplest one: something guests can join without being put on the spot, that fills the wait before the reveal, and that leaves someone with more than a photo afterwards.
A paint-your-own plaster activity does that quietly. Guests choose colours, paint a piece in their own style and leave something behind that was made on the day.
At Jubiloo, we make our plaster items in small batches using our own moulds. Our Baby Shower & Gender Reveal Paint Activity Kit is built for exactly this kind of celebration: small, relaxed and more about the people in the room than the schedule.
What makes a good gender reveal activity for a small group?
Large reveals can carry their own entertainment. A small one works differently. Six people around a kitchen table, or a handful of family in a garden, is a different kind of room.
With a small group, an activity generally needs to be:
- Easy to explain in one sentence
- Optional, so nobody feels pushed into performing
- Quiet enough that people can still talk
- Something that works while you wait for everyone to arrive
- Able to leave a keepsake rather than a bin bag of packaging
Painting fits all five. It gives hands something to do, which is often what people want most while a room waits for news.
Where the paint activity fits around the reveal
The painting happens before the announcement. It is an activity for the build-up, not the reveal itself.
That is the useful part. The stretch before a reveal is mostly waiting, and a creative table gives guests a reason to gather in one spot while everyone arrives. Some hosts turn it into a guessing game and ask people to paint what they think the baby will be, then keep the pieces afterwards as a record of who guessed what.
What a particular kit includes varies, so check the product page for the option you are considering. The announcement itself stays yours to make however you like.
How to set up the activity
You do not need much space.
- Choose one table and cover the surface.
- Set out one kit per guest who wants to take part.
- Keep the supplied instructions where people can see them.
- Leave room for finished pieces to rest undisturbed.
- Make sure an adult supervises any children who are painting.
Keep it optional. Some guests will paint carefully for twenty minutes, some will add three colours and go back to their tea, and both are fine.
Ideas for a small gender reveal celebration
A few ways to give the activity a little shape:
- Ask each guest to paint a piece as a small gift for the parents-to-be
- Let guests write their name or the date on the underside of their piece
- Display the finished pieces together as a group keepsake from the day
- Combine the activity with a baby shower if you are marking both in one gathering
- Keep one unpainted piece aside for someone who could not attend
If you are planning a baby shower rather than a reveal, our guide to baby shower activity ideas covers the same activity from that angle.
What is the paint like?
Jubiloo uses a vivid water-based paint range that is designed to be approachable for beginners and enjoyable for more confident creators.
The paint used in Jubiloo kits is non-toxic and suitable for children when used as intended and with appropriate adult supervision. It cleans relatively easily from hands and work surfaces. If paint gets onto clothing, treat it with soap as soon as possible; results can vary depending on the fabric and how long the paint has been left to dry.
Our white paint is non-yellowing, helping painted designs stay bright over time.
Paint should not be eaten or placed in the mouth. Always follow the instructions and warnings supplied with the kit.
Age and supervision
Jubiloo kits are not suitable for children under 3 years old.
Where children are joining a family celebration, they should use their kit with appropriate adult supervision and according to the instructions supplied. Check the relevant product page for exact kit contents and any product-specific guidance before ordering.
Planning and ordering
Before ordering for a reveal, it helps to settle:
- How many guests will actually want to paint
- Whether children are attending
- The date of the celebration and how firm it is
- How much table space you have
- Whether you need a group quantity
Jubiloo items are handmade, and some orders need preparation time, so order early for a fixed date. For a larger quantity or a time-sensitive celebration, contact us before checkout and we will help you choose the right option.
Jubiloo delivers within South Africa. Delivery costs and courier options are calculated at checkout through Bob Go.
A keepsake from the day
A gender reveal is a short moment. The photographs capture the announcement, but the hour around it is what most people actually remember.
A small painted piece, made at the table by someone who was there, is a quiet way to keep hold of that.
