Screen-Free Indoor Activities for Kids: Set Up a Simple Paint Moment

When children are indoors, it helps to have an activity that feels more interesting than simply filling time.

A paint-your-own plaster kit gives a child something physical to choose, hold, colour and create. It can be a simple screen-free activity for a rainy afternoon, a quiet weekend at home, a playdate or a creative break during the school holidays.

At Jubiloo, we make plaster items in small batches using our own moulds. Each kit is designed to give children a creative starting point without requiring them to begin with a blank page.

Why a paint activity works at home

Children do not always need a complicated craft project.

Sometimes the best activity is one clear idea, a few colours and enough space to make something their own. A plaster piece gives a child a shape to start with, while the paint gives them freedom to decide what it becomes.

There is no single correct result. A rocket can be bright and bold, a letter can become a favourite colour, and two children can paint the same type of piece in completely different ways.

That makes a paint kit useful when you want an activity that is:

How to set up a simple paint moment

You do not need a full craft room.

Start with a clear table or another protected work surface. Put the kit, paint and instructions within reach, and make sure there is an adult nearby to supervise.

A simple setup can look like this:

  1. Cover the table with an old cloth, paper or wipeable covering.
  2. Choose one Jubiloo plaster item to paint.
  3. Put out only the colours needed at first.
  4. Keep the supplied instructions nearby.
  5. Let the child choose their own colour ideas.
  6. Give the finished piece a safe place to rest afterwards.

The goal is not to make the activity perfect. It is to give the child space to create something they feel proud of.

Make the activity feel special

A small change in setup can make an ordinary afternoon feel more intentional.

Try giving the paint session a simple theme:

You can also make it a shared activity. Sit nearby, paint your own piece if you have one, or simply ask the child about the colours and ideas they are choosing.

What is the paint like?

Jubiloo uses a vivid water-based paint range that is designed to be approachable for beginners and enjoyable for more confident creators.

The paint used in Jubiloo kits is non-toxic and suitable for children when used as intended and with appropriate adult supervision. It cleans relatively easily from hands and work surfaces. If paint gets onto clothing, treat it with soap as soon as possible; results can vary depending on the fabric and how long the paint has been left to dry.

Our white paint is non-yellowing, helping painted designs stay bright over time.

Paint should not be eaten or placed in the mouth. Always follow the instructions and warnings supplied with the kit.

A note on age and supervision

Jubiloo kits are not suitable for children under 3 years old.

Children should use a kit with appropriate adult supervision and according to the instructions supplied with the product. Before ordering, check the relevant product page for exact kit contents and guidance.

Choosing the right kit

The best kit depends on what you want the activity to become.
